Acting Bishop Thanked
09 November 2006
An Honorary Assistant Bishop who has been leading the Diocese of Birmingham for the last year has been thanked by the new Bishop, the Rt Revd David Urquhart for his care, hospitality, wisdom and energy.
While being presented with gifts and cards, Bishop Michael Whinney and his wife Veronica were thanked and applauded by nearly 200 clergy at a study day held in Birmingham Cathedral on Thursday November 9th.
Since Bishop Sentamu left the city in November 2005 to become Archbishop of York, Bishop Michael has held the title of Archbishop's Episcopal Commissary in Birmingham - or Acting Bishop.
Bishop David said; "It is clear that this Diocese has been in extremely good hands for the last year and has been nourished, encouraged and most of all, loved. This year has been marked by hospitality and pastoral care while mission initiatives have been flourishing and links with communities strengthened.
"For me personally, Bishop Michael has been a great friend and a great minister - his personal warmth has made me feel very welcome and his guidance means I can hit the ground running. I know there are many who would like to add their own thanks to mine.
"Bishop Michael said: "It has been a delight and a privilege to be at helm of the Diocese for the past year. It has been at times challenging and exciting but also great fun and very heartening. I am glad I will still be around, as one of the college of retired Bishops who minister in the Diocese, to contribute to the amazing things God is doing in this area."
