New Year Resolution No. 1: Go to Malawi!
11 December 2006

New Year Resolution No 1: Go to Malawi!
In celebration of forty years of the Malawi Partnership, the Malawi Task Group launched a skills-sharing programme during 2006.  As a result of 2 successful trips there will now be 3 distinctive programmes running:

· Skills Share
· Work Share
· Encounter

The purpose of the programmes is primarily:

  • to encourage the Church in Malawi
  • to increase awareness of the World Church
  • to grow and be challenged in our own faith
  • to assist Christians in Malawi to develop their communities

· Skills Share: using specific occupational skills, and where appropriate, passing these on to Malawians through training. Skills might be in the areas of, for example, teaching, healthcare & medicine, engineering, IT, mechanics, plumbing, agriculture etc.

· Work Share: using general practical skills and requiring a willingness to perform a variety of practical tasks such as DIY, gardening, building etc

These programmes will involve people deploying their gifts and assisting local people in community project work in order to bring hope through practical and economic change. There will also be opportunity to share in worship and Christian education.

Volunteering for the Malawi Skills Share or Work Share Programme offers you the opportunity to use your skills to make a tangible contribution to community life and faith in one of the poorest countries of the world.  Living and working with a local community is an unforgettable experience which you can never hope to gain as a tourist.  However, there will be an opportunity to relax by the lakeside at the end & enjoy a wildlife safari.

We are looking for people between the ages of 18 and 75 to be part of a team who will travel together and work in Malawi for a minimum of two weeks.

· Encounter: a gentler pace involving exposure to Malawi life; staying with Malawian families, listening, sharing and worshipping together with the Malawian Church, exploring the country and it's wildlife.

In all the above 3 programmes there will be opportunity to extend your stay should you wish to do so and / or arrange a stop over in another country prior to your return.

Our intention is to be 100% self-sufficient, placing no financial burden on the Church in Malawi.  With this in mind, each participant would be expected to cover their own costs.

You would need to arrange for the necessary vaccinations and anti-malarials and we would expect you to be in good general health.
