Mothers Union urges Mothers Day that will make a difference
07 February 2007

The 100,000 strong membership of the Mothers’ Union (MU) in the UK are highlighting the plight of mothers facing adversity around the world in a unique Mothering Sunday campaign this year.
The campaign, Make a Mother’s Day, is, the charity believes, the first ethical gift catalogue to focus totally on assisting mothers and their families. The gifts, ranging from £5 to £100 are all designed to make a tangible difference to the lives of mothers, both worldwide, and in the UK. Each gift purchased comes with a card explaining the work they are supporting, which can then be personalised to send to a mother or to keep in their memory.

With each gift the MU, founded 130 years ago, will support community projects such as HIV/AIDs care, good practice in nutrition, hygiene and agricultural skills and literacy across the developing world and the UK: the range of gifts includes malaria prevention and support for mothers in prison, to Community trainers working with groups affected by poverty.

The most popular gift so far is the Emergency Aid Kit for £28 MU volunteers such as Marga working with displaced people in DR Congo will be enabled to supply essential supplies and utensils to displaced people in their area. In 12 months Marga and her team have helped 2,000 families, and the MU will have many such calls on its resources in the year ahead. “We are amazed by the love and compassion shown by you” she wrote to MU. “Thank You”

For further details, or to support a mother and her family, go to www.themotheresunion.org and print off the online order form.

NOTE TO EDITORS:
The Mothers' Union is an international family charity with 3.6 million members dedicated to promoting marriage and family life. It realises that the wellbeing of the family cannot be separated from the welfare of wider communities and therefore undertakes groundbreaking community work in 77 countries.  Subjects of recent concern are the MU’s Flexible Families Campaign which advocates the passing of laws to give parents of all children under 18 the right to request flexible working; representation at the UN on the Commission on the Status of Women; and promoting marriage and gender equality in marriage. Other initiatives include training facilitators to organise parenting groups, projects in child contact centres and prisons. Globally, thousands of women and girls have benefited from the MU's Literacy and Development
